New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A COMPLETE UNKNOWN, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

Georgia O'Keeffe: The Brightness of Light

NR

Georgia O’Keeffe is widely revered as the “Mother of American Modernism” and the greatest woman artist of the 20th century. In the 1920s, O’Keeffe became famous for her paintings of flowers, bones, and the beauty of nature. She posed nude for shocking photographs by her lover, Alfred Stieglitz. But she denied the widespread belief that her paintings depicted sexual imagery. In the 1970s, living in her beloved New Mexico, she emerged as an iconic role model for American women. This feature documentary film stars Claire Danes as the Voice of Georgia O’Keeffe with narration by Hugh Dancy.

Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill: Live From Prague

Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill: Live From Prague

TBC

Roger Waters, founding member and creative force behind the legendary Pink Floyd, brings to the screen his live show, Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill: Live From Prague - The Movie. Directed by Sean Evans and Roger Waters, the film combines iconic songs from his Pink Floyd days with those from his solo career, encompassing a timespan of sixty years. The show is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to love, protect and share our precious and precarious planet home. Dedicated to “our brothers and sisters all over the world who are engaged in the existential battle for the soul of humanity”, the movie is an extraordinary assault on the senses, not just musically and visually, but politically and philosophically as well. It captures performances of songs from some of the most influential albums of all time – The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, together with those from the most popular of Waters’ solo career, including Amused To Death and Is This The Life We Really Want? Brought together with his band and crew, the show is majestic, with performances that are powerful yet controlled. The sense of control is emphasised by the 360° stage. It provides intimacy and allows the performers to play to all sections of the audience “in the round”. With a rectangular centre with runways extending from each side, creating an elongated cross. Above it is a set of giant LED screens configured the same way. Made up of 12 surfaces, and totalling a huge 650 square meters, they project numerous images and messages that vividly and powerfully reinforce the meanings behind the songs. Because of the size and position of the screens, they can be seen throughout the arena and promote a high-energy production with maximum audience participation.

In 2003, eight young Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment in a hidden space inside the Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall's electricity, and even secretly constructed a brick wall with a locking door, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for all its inhabitants - a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art, a clubhouse to coordinate their artistic charity, and finally, a 750 square foot space that sticks it to the man.

Stepping Into The Unknown: Bob Dylan Center Films

Spanning decades and musical styles, this far-ranging one-hour program of short films and videos from the Bob Dylan Archive features rare and previously unreleased clips of Dylan on stage and in the studio. Selections include a devastating solo rendition of “Ballad of Hollis Brown” from the 1963 TV special “Folk Songs and More Folk Songs;” appearances at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival in both acoustic and “going electric” modes; a rollicking 1976 take on “I Pity the Poor Immigrant” with Joan Baez; a gospel-infused “Blowin’ in the Wind;” an apocalyptically rocking “When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky” with Dylan backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; loving tributes to Johnny Cash and Tony Bennett; a glimpse into the Archive’s film restoration project with never-before-seen footage of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” from 1966; and many more treasures from the Archive. Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins will present the films and engage in a post-screening discussion and audience Q&A.

The Last Class

The Last Class

NR

The Last Class is a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich teaching his final course and reflecting on a period of immense transformation, personally and globally. It is a love letter to education. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Now, after over 40 years and an extraordinary 40,000 students, Reich is preparing for his last class. Over the course of the film, Reich confronts the impending finality, and his own aging, with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society. One thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus, the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. His belief in the next generation’s ability to take on the fight is inspiring.
