Star of Deathdream Richard Backus will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Released in Havana in 1931 and largely unseen again until the 90s, DRÁCULA is no simple duplicate of its better-known twin, but a singular and fascinating counterpoint, and an effective take on the classic vampire tale.

An animated film of protean visual invention that moves at a machine-gun clip, MIND GAME ostensibly tells the story of Nishi, a no-future 20-year-old whose dreams of romance are reignited by a chance meeting with Myon, his childhood crush. How do we go from there, to a death by gunshot to the anus, to a 1,000-car pile-up, to a sojourn in a bamboo palace built in the belly of a whale? The narrative logic of Masaaki Yuasa’s hare-brained masterclass isn’t easily divined, but the pieces, riddled with quick-change transmutations and existential punch, always add up.
